Sudbury Writers’ Guild Launches “Painted Voices”
In early 2020 the Sudbury Writers’ Guild put out a call for stories and poems inspired by the love-it-or-hate-it transformed Paris St. landmark, the Sudbury General Hospital of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. In July 2019, Up Here Festival invited the artist RISK to create Canada’s largest mural on the hospital’s walls. Selected from more than 60 poems and stories, the Guild’s just-released chapbook presents a unique perspective on the hospital and the mural.
The Guild deeply appreciated financial support for the chapbook from The Arts and Culture program of the City of Greater Sudbury and Panoramic Properties. We also thank the Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie, Bennett Malcolmson, Jason Innis, Paul Truskoski and members of the Sudbury Writers’ Guild for providing photos.
We had help from many other community sources: a volunteer committee of Guild members, the current poet laureate Vera Constantineau, editing by former poet laureates Kim Fahner and Daniel Aubin, design by former poet laureate Chloe Laduchesse and Bennett Malcolmson, advice and mentorship from Up Here Festival, Latitude 46, Sudbury Arts Council and so many more. This is truly a local project of love and admiration for a building all Sudburians are deeply connected to.

News: Update on Hospital Mural Writing Project
The Sudbury Writers’ Guild would like to thank all those who submitted to our Hospital Mural Writing Project. The Guild received a variety of prose and poetry texts from writers in the community. All submissions were reviewed by a blind panel and the results should be emailed to you in the coming days. From the chosen pieces the Sudbury Writers Guild will be producing a chapbook titled, Painted Voices, in the coming months.
We sincerely thank all of you for your submissions and we encourage you to continue your interest and dedication to writing. Writing is one of the great achievements of our society and is a skill and activity that every person can develop and enjoy. We encourage you in the continuation of your writing career.
